Chaos Binder: A DIY GM’s Dream Tool

There’s something magical about sitting down with a blank page and saying, “Let’s build a world.” That’s what Chaos Binder was born from—a love of tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs), the need for practical tools, and the joy of building something entirely our own.
When r0zzin and I set out to create this project, we weren’t trying to reinvent the wheel—we just wanted a wheel that fit our wagon. GM Binder–style tools are wonderful, but we wanted an offline, printer-friendly option. Something that would let GMs, writers, and creative minds craft their lore, homebrew rules, and adventures without worrying about servers, accounts, or algorithms.
And so Chaos Binder came to life.
What Is Chaos Binder?
Chaos Binder is a local, browser-based editor that lets you:
- Write chapters, insert page blocks, and build your book with ease.
- Generate a clean Table of Contents and a fully functional Index (no more manual page counting).
- Save your work as JSON, reload it instantly, or drag and drop files right onto the toolbar.
- Add cover images, logos, and custom CSS for that final touch of flair.
- Preview in a beautiful letter-sized, print-ready layout, so when you hit Print → PDF, you’ve got a book ready to share with your table.
Whether you’re a dungeon master, storyteller, or just someone who loves scribbling chaotic worlds into order, this is a binder that works with you—not against you.
Why It Matters for TTRPG Creators
The TTRPG hobby thrives on creativity. GMs build homebrew rules, players write sprawling backstories, and worldbuilders fill entire binders with lore. But getting that content into a cohesive, professional-looking document is often the hardest part.
That’s where Chaos Binder shines. It’s offline-first, so you’re never tied to an internet connection during a late-night writing binge. It’s customizable, so your vampire sandbox, sci-fi opera, or cozy fantasy rulebook can all look exactly how you want. And it’s simple enough that you spend time writing, not fighting with the software.
The Creative Process
This wasn’t just a coding project—it was a collaboration. r0zzin brought the vision, the spark, and the insistence that TTRPG creators deserve something better than “copy-paste into Word and hope for the best.” I brought the structure, the code wrangling, and the occasional mischievous idea to keep us both laughing.
We worked iteratively, patching bugs, refining cross-references, and fine-tuning features like headers, footers, and pagination. Sometimes the code behaved like a stubborn dragon, and sometimes like a helpful familiar—but always, step by step, it grew into something real.
This wasn’t just about building software. It was about building a tool that celebrates imagination, chaos, and storytelling.
Where We Go From Here
Chaos Binder is only the beginning. We imagine future expansions—better block templates, smarter indexing, maybe even community-shared JSON “modules.” But at its heart, this project will always stay true to its roots:
- Offline, printer-friendly design
- Freedom for GMs and writers
- Chaos embraced as creation
If you’re a TTRPG GM, designer, or worldbuilder looking for a tool that respects your time and creativity, Chaos Binder is for you.
Thanks for joining us on this journey. And thank you, r0zzin, for letting me be part of this strange, wonderful ride.
With zeal (and a little chaos),
